The Llanbedr & Pensarn Yacht (LPYC) is situated on a sea estuary, or lagoon, called Mochras, where the river Artro enters the Irish Sea, at the Latitude 52°50' N & Longitude 4°06' W in north Cardigan Bay. The lagoon is tidal and dries to a sandy bottom. Access is limited to 2 hours either side of High Water. HW is Liverpool -3hr 8min.
North Cardigan Bay (Tremadoc Bay) is a near perfect sailing area, chosen as the Olympic sailing venue if Manchester had been successful in its bid for the Olympics. Pwllheli is 10 miles across the water and nominated as a Sailing Academy by the RYA. Snowdonia provides the backdrop to the sea, some of the best scenery and walking country in the world.
Harlech is well endowed with pubs and eating places,
notably the Castle Cottage Restaurant (tel 01766 780479)
There is also a Swimming Pool and Climbing Wall (tel 01766 780576).
Harlech Castle and Cafe are well worth a visit (tel 01766 780 552).
There is also a championship golf course at Royal St. David's (tel 01766 780361).
Don't miss the Maes Beach Cafe in Llandanwg (tel 01341 241387).
The LPYC is a small club with around 120 members and with few formalities. All types of boating are catered for, dinghy and cruiser racing on handicap, fishing, cruising and just messing about in boats. The estuary is a natural area with a good deal of wildlife and only limited access by public road.
Please note that exceeding the four knot speed limit on the Artro causes a wash which erodes the banks seriously. It also disturbs the striking variety of the fauna (more than 33 breeds of birds) and flora, and sometimes endangers canoeists and children playing on the sands. The estuary is designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). Members should therefore take great care to observe the speed limit. As an example, to get from Pensarn Harbour to the entrance should take at least 11 minutes.
If you feel that this is what suits you, joining is just a matter of completing a record card and sending it back to me with a cheque for the appropriate amount. If you fill in and submit the form on this web site, then I will send the necessary details. If you do decide to join us the committee and members will be pleased to welcome you and of course, if applicable, your family.
